Who Can Vote in Minnesota?

To vote in Minnesota, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be at least 18 years old on Election Day (16- and 17-year-olds can preregister)
  • Have lived in Minnesota for at least 20 days
  • Not be in jail for a felony conviction
  • Not be under a court order that removes your right to vote

Ways to Register to Vote

1. Online
You’ll need:

  • Your Minnesota driver’s license, state ID number, or the last 4 digits of your Social Security number
  • An email address
  • To be eligible to vote in MN (see requirements above)
  • To re-register if your name or address changes

2. Onsite (Election Day)

  • You can register at your polling place on Election Day by filling out a registration form
  • Bring ID and proof of residence

3. Automatic Registration

  • If you’re eligible to vote, you’ll be automatically registered when you apply for or renew a Minnesota state ID or driver’s license
